Winter Ski Programme

We have had an amazing winter sports programme this year. The students have clearly learnt huge amount about taking responsibility for themselves and their equipment. They all received fantastic feedback from their instructors and have remarkably improved. Congrats to the Coronet students, you were all awesome! :)

Writing

We've been focusing on really interesting beginnings for our writing because if we have an interesting beginning, people will want to keep reading. Here are some of our beginnings:

When I did the cross country race I went over lots of obsticles.
- Lucas

When I was at the starting line I felt butterflies in my tummy! Cross country was amazing!!!
- Riley

As my legs shivered as the wind, cold wind, blew softly through the beautiful blue sky, tears came out because I was so so happy that the big day had arrived.
- Audrey

Olympics in Coronet!

Go New Zealand! We are proud supports of the New Zealand Olympic team in Coronet. We have been looking at the history of the Olympic games and learning about the Olympic flame and rings. We have created our own Olympic torches to shine bring for the duration of the games. We have also used our growth mindset to make origami Olympic rings.

You can see the concentration! They had to read and follow the instructions to create the Olympic rings. Great team work!

Ben and Chase holding their flame with pride.

Sticky note challenge!

At Shotover we are getting into the sticky note challenge! We are collaborating to create a sticky note design on grid paper, then making it come to life on our windows. Watch out for sticky note creations around the school. Have you tried one at home yet?

Writing Fun!

Students in Coronet are really motivated to write and love choosing different places to work in the habitat!

Day Two on The Remarkables

What a stunning second day on the mountain! The weather and the snow were amazing. It's wonderful to see the students wanting to get on the slopes as soon as possible. The children are showing excellent independence by carrying and taking responsibility of their gear, which is fantastic. Fingers crossed our luck continues with the weather! 😅

Building a Japanese Garden

Some children have been reading about Japanese Gardens. They are very peaceful places and are very important to people in Japan because it is such a big city and always busy!

The children are building a Japanese sand tray garden for our habitat.

The toys movement...

Flying Foxes have been thinking about how the fashion of toys has moved. We drew pictures of our favourite baby toys and toys today. We played quoits, and bop it too!

Joy!

Our focus value this term is joy and the obvious example of this is during 'tinkering time.' We are also showing the students how joy is experienced through being challenged and overcoming it. Look at those faces! 😃

Maths - The Pit!

Coronet are striving to challenge our students and a few found themselves in 'the pit.' We are learning to subtract using a jump strategy and it required combining knowledge and strategy. There were a few frustrated and grumpy faces! However, after working hard, this frustration that turned into joy as they climbed out of 'the pit!' 😃

Concept - Past, Present and Future!

We have been finding out what we know about how time changes things and affects our lives. Coronet has collected their first ideas and are beginning to look at local things in the past, present and future such as Coronet Peak and the fire service. Our favourite student comment so far is that, 'When you are sad time moves slowly and when you are happy time moves quickly!' 👍

Reading Engagement! 😃

Coronet has tweaked its reading programme so two mentors can teach in guided reading groups and the other two mentors set up activities based on reading skills. The students were totally engaged in their vocabulary work yesterday and found lots of new, interesting words based on topics they choose. 👍

Amazing First Day On Remarkables

What a stunning start to our ski programme! Thank you parents for all your support and patience. It took awhile to get up and down, but all the students had an amazing experience for lots of different reasons! Independently surviving rentals and being on the mountain for the first time are a couple of worthy mentions. Well done to Mr Brown who organised and coordinated such a busy day, thank you.
